The Story Beyond the Struggle
One of the themes we've been exploring in the Hero’s Journey SEL program is recognition—the ability to look beyond first impressions and see the strengths, struggles, and humanity in others. Many of the teens in our group have experienced being misunderstood, underestimated, or judged based on differences that others notice first. Through the story of a young Liondrake named Aim and the mysterious realm of Valhalla, our adventurers have encountered characters who are overlooked, underestimated, and misunderstood, only to discover that those first impressions rarely tell the whole story.
Perhaps most importantly, the adventurers exploreg the idea that carrying a challenge does not make someone broken. An injury, disability, learning difference, social struggle, or personal fear is something everyone carries at some point, but it is not the sum of who they are. As our heroes continue their journey, they will be challenged to look again, think deeper, and discover strengths in themselves and others that may have been there all along.
